"Just record the greeting, Charlotte!"
I sat and listened to two women tussle back and forth about who would record the voicemail greeting for the last 5 minutes.
"Fine, I'll record the greeting!"
Both women stopped fussing and looked over at me.
Charlotte smiled, "Thank you, I just hate how my voice sounds."
Wondering why I agreed to lunch after my friend finished his job was the worst idea. He said we would only be there about 15 minutes over an hour earlier. I was hangry and ready to leave!
The last step in setting up this customer's phone system was to record greetings. My friend said that was the most challenging part of the job.
"No one wants to record the greetings," he said with a laugh.
I walked over to my friend and told him I would do the recordings. He guided me to a conference room only to find the board room was in use and packed. Quickly he introduced me to the team members occupying the room and stated I would be finished in a jiff. He needed to set up the voice greeting, and we would be out of their hair. As I was about to sit down, my stomach growled a hangry growl. "Someone is ready to eat, huh?" a lovely gentleman said. I responded, "That is why I am doing the recordings." I quickly winked at him and turned to my friend for guidance. He was scribbling what he wanted me to say on paper.
I sat, center of the boardroom, which now had a quiet hush, while my friend finished composing the script. He handed the script to the owner and asked a few questions about the voice prompts and if the extensions were correct. My friend then gave me a piece of paper. He picked up the phone from the middle of the boardroom and handed me the receiver. I glanced up and waited for his signal to start speaking. I lifted my reading page. Words from my music teacher echoed in my head as I began speaking the script. I occasionally paused to breathe, turning my head away from the mic.
I finished the recording two minutes later and cued my friend to punch the # sign.
I lowered the receiver and the paper to see all eyes on me.
My face flushed as my friend smiled and said, “That was great! I can’t believe you did that in one take!” He grabbed the phone base and played back the message.
The company's owner and CEO, sitting next to me, smiled and said, “Well, I believe we have a new voice for the company!”
